ARDA pushes research results for FDA to unlock laws to prepare rPET for utilization industry

                 28 June 2022 Agricultural Research Development Agency (Public Organization) or ARDA, organized to Agriculture Policy Forum Opportunities and rPET for Packaging Industry 2022” via electronic media (Zoom Cloud Meetings) and Facebook live by Dr. Suwit Chaikiattiyos, Executive Director of the Agricultural Research Development Agency (Public Organization), discussing research development guidelines for consumer safety. Worasuda Yungthong, Director of the Food Division Food and Drug Administration, discussed guidelines for utilizing the notification of the Ministry of Public Health (No. 435) B.E. 2565 to the participants of the seminar.

               Ms. Salina Sangthong, Food and Drug Administration, as a speaker to transfer knowledge on the Notification of the Ministry of Public Health (No. 435) B.E. 2522 issued under the Food Act B.E. 2522 (1979) regarding the quality or standard of plastic containers. Which successfully considered and effective on June 18, 2022 (Repealed Notification No. 295 B.E. 2548), revised and added to the requirements on the types of containers made of plastic quality requirements or standards for plastic containers procedures for submitting document assessments, etc.

              In addition, there is a discussion forum under the topic “Opportunities and Factors Driving rPET towards Sustainable Utilization” participants in the discussion as Assoc. Prof. Dr. Amporn Sane, Department of Packaging and Materials Technology Faculty of Agro-Industry, Kasetsart University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chaniphun Butryee, Institute of Nutrition, Mahidol University, Ms. Salina Sangthong, Food, and Drug Administration, Ms. Nantiwat Thammahatai, Thai Beverage Industry Association, Mr. Anivesh Tewari, Regional Business Head, PET Recycling-Asia, Indorama Ventures. Mr. Pranay Jain, EcoBlue Limited. Mr. Nattanan Sirirak, Vice President - Plastic Recycling Business - PTT Global Chemical, PCL. (Managing Director, ENVICCO Limited) and Assoc. Prof. Dr.Tunyarut Jinkarn, Faculty of Agro-Industry. The moderators of the discussion at the forum. There are recommendations for the factors driving recycling plastics use as follows: 

  • Recycling PET plastic packaging use for packaging into recycled plastic pellets is an effective way to reduce the amount of virgin plastic used.
  • Using rPET is a challenge for Thailand and affects the capability of the country is a development that will help eliminate waste for the country world and the environment better.
  • Raising awareness of the importance of recycling plastics among people and changing the behavior of using recycled plastic, including infrastructure must be clear.
  • There must be policies and incentives that encourage consumers to use environmentally friendly products. and education that makes consumers confident that using recycled plastic is good for the environment, reduces waste, and is still safe to use If it is started to be used and expanded will reduce the cost of producing rPET
  • There should be promotion and management from the beginning to the end from waste sorting, etc.

               In addition, there is the exchange of knowledge between the speakers as a guideline for the participants to apply the knowledge gained to develop and extend their business.
